The thing that makes Altrincham different underground is what the pipe is bedded in. Up on the Bowdon ridge and across much of WA14 the subsoil is sand and gravel over sandstone rather than the clay you get further east, and it is free-draining. That sounds harmless and is not: when a joint starts leaking, the escaping water carries the fine material away with it, and over years it washes out a void under the pipe.
What that produces is a particular sequence. The pipe loses the support it was laid on, so it sags into the hollow; the sag holds water; the standing water catches solids; and the section that was merely leaking becomes the section that blocks every time. It also means a small defect here is worth taking more seriously than the same defect in clay ground, because the ground is actively making it worse. The other half of the town — Broadheath and out towards Timperley — is low, flat, former industrial land by the canal, where runs silt rather than sag. Same symptom, different cause, which is why we would rather look than guess.
