Local knowledge

Drainage in Hazel Grove

Hazel Grove runs in layers either side of the A6. The older terraced stock along the main road is Victorian and Edwardian, much of it on shared clay laterals running behind the houses, so a blockage on one property is regularly not that property's fault at all — it is four doors down.

Behind that sit the post-war and 1960s–70s estates, and those bring a different problem entirely: pitch fibre pipe. It was used widely in that period, it was perfectly good at the time, and it has a habit of blistering and going oval as it ages. A camera shows it immediately — the bore looks squashed rather than cracked. It matters because a deformed pitch fibre run cannot simply be jetted clear and forgotten, and it is one of the few cases where lining will not work without rerounding the pipe first. Worth knowing before someone quotes you for the wrong repair.

Case study

A job in Hazel Grove

Off the A6, SK7

The problem
A terrace where three neighbouring houses were all getting slow drainage at once, and each had been quoted separately by a national firm for work on their own pipework.
What the camera found
One shared lateral running behind the row, blocked solid with fat and wipes about twenty metres along — well past the point where any one of the three properties ended.
The fix
Jetted the shared run clear from the downstream chamber and cameraed it end to end. Because it was a shared lateral it was United Utilities' responsibility, so we told the owners that, gave them the footage to send on, and charged for the survey rather than the repair.

What we do in Hazel Grove

If the same drain in your Hazel Grove property blocks two or three times a year, jetting is not the answer — the pipe itself is damaged. A camera survey will tell you which, and lining repairs it without digging.

Hazel Grove — common questions

My neighbours have the same problem — whose drain is it?

If the pipe serves more than one property it is almost certainly United Utilities', and has been since 2011. That is very common in the older terraces along the A6. We can camera it and give you the footage to send them, which is usually all they need to take it on.

What is pitch fibre pipe and do I have it?

It is a pipe material used a lot on 1950s–70s estates that deforms and blisters with age. If your house is from that period and the drain keeps slowing without any obvious blockage, it is worth a camera survey — it looks squashed rather than cracked, and it needs a different repair from a broken clay pipe.

Who is responsible for the drain — me or United Utilities?

Roughly: the pipework inside your boundary that only serves your property is yours. Once it joins a pipe shared with a neighbour, or crosses your boundary, it is almost always United Utilities' — that changed in 2011 and a lot of people in Hazel Grove still do not know it. If we find the blockage is on their side we will tell you, and you should not be paying us to clear it.
