What actually blocks drains in Stockport homes
After twenty years under this particular patch of Greater Manchester, the causes are fairly predictable:
- Wet wipes. The single most common cause, by a distance. "Flushable" is a marketing claim, not an engineering one — they do not break down, they catch on joints, and they build a mat that everything else sticks to.
- Fat, oil and grease. Poured down a sink warm and liquid, solid by the time it reaches the cold pipe under the garden. Builds up over months until the day it does not pass.
- Root ingress. Very common in Stockport. Much of the borough is pre-1960s housing on clay pipe with mortar joints, and mature trees near a drain run will find those joints. Roots get in as hair-fine threads and grow into a plug.
