Offerton is predominantly post-war: 1950s to 1970s estate housing built out along the slope down towards the Goyt. Two things about that period matter underground. The first is pitch fibre pipe, used extensively on estates of this age, which blisters and goes oval as it degrades. It looks squashed on camera rather than cracked, and it is one of the few faults where standard lining will not work until the pipe has been rerounded — so it is well worth identifying before anyone quotes.
The second is the fall of the land. Runs here can be steep, and steep runs scour the water away and leave the solids behind, so blockages form part-way down rather than at the obvious point. - What the camera found
- Pitch fibre, deformed to roughly an oval over about four metres. The bore was never fully open, which is why jetting kept helping briefly and never fixed it, and why rodding found no obstruction to hit.
- The fix
- Rerounded the deformed section and lined it to hold the shape permanently, through the existing access. No excavation, no replacement run, and about half the cost of the dig-and-replace quote.
